Your cat is not destroying the couch out of spite. Scratching sharpens claws, stretches the whole spine, and leaves scent marks that say this place is mine. It is a need, not a habit — which means the goal is never to stop scratching, only to move it somewhere you both can live with.

Why the couch keeps winning

Cats pick scratching spots that are sturdy, tall enough for a full stretch, and right in the middle of family life. Most scratching posts fail on all three counts: they wobble, they are too short, and they get tucked into an unused corner. The couch, meanwhile, is rock solid and in the best room of the house.

The quick redirect

Place a heavy, tall post directly next to the scratched corner — not across the room. Rub a little catnip on it and reward every use with a treat. Cover the old spot with double-sided tape or a throw blanket for a week or two. Once the post is winning, you can slide it a few inches a day toward its permanent home. Most cats get the idea within a week or two — a long-standing couch habit can take a few weeks more, so keep the tape up until the post is clearly winning.

Look for posts at least 30 inches tall with a wide base, or a cat tree that doubles as a lookout. Your couch will thank you.
